This Easter Season in the Church talks a lot about the Third Person of the Holy Trinity and the title at the top of this page gives that away of course. The Holy Spirit is mentioned from the very beginnings of creation as a wind, he spoke through the prophets of the Old Testament, He descended like a dove upon Jesus at His Baptism, He fell on the Jerusalem Community as tongues of fire at Pentecost, and He is given to us at Baptism. Probably the best known yet least understood book in the Bible is the book of Jonah. From the world’s point of view, Jonah and the whale have become a part of literature, a part of mythical legendary history. Jonah was actually a historical character, and he is mentioned in other places in scripture. The true message of this story is found in the last two chapters of this little book. When you ask yourself, “Why did Jonah originally refuse to go to Nineveh?” you get very close to the heart of this book’s message. Why did Jonah refuse to go? Yesterday was a very famous anniversary (or infamous) for something that happened 35 years ago. Most of you were not alive in 1973 when this event occurred but it still affects each of us today. Some of the people involved have since died, others have gone through real faith conversions, and others are still doing exactly what they were doing back on that historical day in United States History. The anniversary I am talking about is the Supreme Court decision in the case of “Roe vs. Wade”. That name might not even mean much to you, but we will look a little closer at how the bible writers would have voted in this 5-4 decision. Would they support Jane Roe in her quest to legalize her own abortion, or would they have supported the District Attorney, Henry Wade as he fought for the rights of her unborn child. Is this about simply what is “legal” or we must now decide for ourselves what is “moral”. It isn’t about choice it is about life!

You may be experiencing a “Mountain Top” feeling, wishing you could stay up there and never return to the boring normalcy of life. Some of you might even be experiencing a “Down in the Dumps” feeling tonight, and we have all been there too, wishing not to return there.
